I'm thinking about getting a lab for myself, but face only one major problem. We have wooden floors and I'm worried that the dogs nails would eventually ruin the floor. Anyone faced this problem? How did you handle it?

P.S. I haven't been on here for a while - like the improvements

Puppy Obedience Classes

Just get a new lab? One of the best things you can do to get your friendship off to a great start is enroll him in a basic obedience class (once he's up-to-date on his vaccinations, of course *wink*)

It's a great way to learn (for the novice owner) just how to use certain commands and just how a young pup thinks, or for the more experienced owner to just brush up on some teaching methods. Most classes are very informative and present the right and wrong ways to correct, say and show your pup just what you want him or her to do! It's also a very easy way to start socializing your pup, getting him used to other people and other dogs.

I'm thinking about getting a boxer to go along with my lab. My sister just got one recently and the thing is super cute. Do they get along well? Those breeds I mean?

So my Lab just go yest infection in her ear least week. It's disgusting, I never knew I was supposed to clean her ears, but now I do it weekly. Just a heads up for you guys.

Hello Folks.
I don't know much about dogs in general, let alone labs.

But, I'm told they are some of the best dogs, and now that my boys are old enough (and responsible enough) to take care of their own pets, I'm wondering what I should get them?

My wife argues that we should see if they take care of a fish before we get them a "real" pet, but I know I would be the one cleaning the aquarium all of thetime.

I would prefer to get them a dog, which could live outside most of the time. My youngest is four, almost five years old, and I think he would be fine. But my six year old is autistic.

How do labs usually behave with children? What special steps should I take if I get them a dog, especially a lab?

Thinking of getting another puppy

We've been thinking of adding another puppy to the family, as a playmate for trixie, she is fantastic round other dogs.
We are in the uk and have been looking on the uk gundog site and there are some good litters there. the pup has to be kc reg.

It's back, labrador of the month you, are entering for march, the winner will be decided by the 29th feb 2012 so you have exactly a month to enter.
To enter simply upload your photos to the thread, if your not sure how to do this just ask.
Also please include the dogs name, you can any retriever breeds, including crossbred retrievers and labradors.

Labrador eyes

I am new to this, please could anybody give me any info, my 7 month black Labrador can see when she is in the house as I have done my own little tests also outside if it is dark but when she is outside when day light it is as though she is blind as she bumps into things such as buildings,cars,walls etc, even when I call her she can walk right past me people have said they can be a very clumsy breed but I am really worried as I have tried different things eg calling her ,throwing a ball etc and she defiantly isn't able to see in the daylight. If anyone can give me any information it would be greatly appreciated thanks

At what age?

i have just been reading a thread re trusting dogs with kids. My previous dog adored my children and vice versa but they were never left alone together.

My question is this..... at what age would you allow your child/ren to be alone with the dog? By age I mean age of child and dog?
My eldest child is 11 and I trust her no end with any animal - she is a very gentle soul, but I would never allow her to be alone with our previous dog as he had HD and so could be unpredictable with the pain. We wont be getting a lab for several months at least so my eldest daughter will be 12 ish and my youngest 7ish depending on when we get a pup

So, how bout another breeds forum so people of the forum who don't have labradors, or have other breeds besides labradors can have place to discuss the other bundle of joy in their family.

What do you guys think, would you be willing to see that on the site? Please give me feedback on this idea.

I am BigSmoke and that username is dedicated to my big Doggy outside. I'm mostly a lurker from TheAdminZone, because I gave up trying to run my own community. I basically want to help out where I am needed, and a community that I can relate to. I wouldn't of signed up if I didn't like community and the reason for the boards. I do not own a lab but I own 3 other dog breeds. I love animals.

I hope to see you all around the board, and who knows maybe I might get a labrador one day.

Hi all

As the title says I have joined this forum to try and do some research to see if a lab is the dog for us. We wont be getting a dog for another several months yet but I thought I would use this time to do my homework and see if this is the best dog for our family. I will be asking lots of questions (so apologies in advance) but I will also be searching through the forums so if you see me on here chances are I am looking at threads to see what it is like to live with these guys.

How would you feel about having social groups on the forum, a little like facebook you can create a group and other members can join and discuss things you like, if you have a passion for motorbikes, you could create a group and then, if other members like motorbikes they can join your group and discuss this with you.
Would appreciate your feed back on this, as i will add this to the site when i do the maintanance.

bleeding lab

hi just wondering if anyone can help.my dog has been bleeding for 9 days now from the mouth.i took him to vets straight away he was kept there for 7 days still bleeding,move him to major vet hospital in the city...after 3 days there still bleeding .had 3 blood transfusions.and op to restitch mouth .ct scan showed bone loss and piece of metal embedded deep in his jaw.bone cancer not suspected,more like a disease,talked to vet this morning .bled heavy again through the night ,now doing an op to tye of vessels and artery,basically its his last chance....has anyone been through anything similar to this.he is 8yrs old and a big strong dog otherwise..giving him every chance i can
